The hospitality industry is one of the most flexible work environments. There is a range of work options to suit everyone from full time, part time or casual work.
Do you want the flexibility to experience different work environments? - whether you want to work in a city dining setting or in a rural outback steakhouse then hospitality is for you.
In parts of Australia, they like to shorten words to make things less formal. Below you will find some useful terms:
BYO - Bring your own
This means you need to bring your own alcohol to the event. This slang can be used in all types of environments such as restaurants, dinner parties or your famous Australia Barbie or BBQ (Barbecue) and much more.
Bring a plate
This is a term to all invitees to bring a dish of food to a dinner party. This is where all party invitees come together and share their meal with one another.
It's important that the host gives an idea to all invitees a theme or if there are any dietary requirements that are guests are allergic to so that they can prepare the right food to bring along.
Grog / Goon
This term is in reference to alcohol - the dinner host may tell you to bring some grog to the party.
Bottle-o
This is another term for a Liquor store - "Go to the bottle-o and buy me a case of beer please'
Next time you are out with your Australian friends, try to brush up on some of these words so that you can fit in with the "Lingo" (strange or incomprehensible language)
