English courses are for students who want to deepen their level of English. Students can choose a wide range of courses and levels from Beginners to Advanced and from General English course to preparation for IELTS or English for further education or business.
A student will sit a test to find out their level of English on their first day at school. After a test, students are put into their corresponding level. Every class has a maximum of 15 students. Classes are 20 hours per week and are divided into Grammar, Reading, Listening, Vocabulary and Conversation Skilled Sessions.

What type of English courses are offered?

ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students)
– Full time study for at least 20 hours per week. International students wishing to come and study full time ELICOS course must have a student visa if they wish to study for more than 3 months.
ESL (English as a Second Language)
– Allows students to study either full time or part time for a period of up to 3 months.

General English Course

Students and teachers work together to prepare students for everyday conversation and daily interactions that take place when travelling or living in an English speaking country. General English courses consist of 6 levels from Beginner to Advanced.

The lessons include Reading, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening and Speaking.

Levels

Beginner:
Students learn basic vocabulary such as simple verbs and common phrases to use in everyday life.
Elementary:
Students increase their vocabulary and learn the use of different tenses such as past and present tense. This is taught to be used in everyday situations on a simple level.
Pre-Intermediate:
Students build on the skills learnt on Elementary level and are taught about more complex sentences using passive and conditional tenses. Students read a variety of texts and will write stories and letters.
Intermediate:
Building on the skills previously learnt in Pre-Intermediate level, students study more complex forms of sentences using modal and conditional forms. Students learn to agree, disagree in their conversations and politely complain, make comparisons and learn to write letters (such as resumes and job applications).
Upper-Intermediate:
Students are competent in all tenses and are expected to use them in the correct format. Students take part in discussions about a wide range of issues and topics. A students reading level should be able to comprehend a variety of texts, research report and formal letters which are included in a writing skilled session.
Advanced:
Students will master all skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening at the highest level.

Business in English

Business in English will not only teach a wide range of English skills needed for communicating in the business world, but this will present the students with sound general knowledge such as writing memos, letters and reports. Students will listen to interviews, read news articles about finance, and build substantial business vocabulary. This option is usually only available for students at the Upper-Intermediate or Advanced level of their general English Course.

English for Academic Purposes

To enter this course, students must have 5.5 IELTS or the equivalent. The course is an intensive English study designed to equip overseas students with the necessary skill to study at a tertiary level in Australian Universities and specialised colleges. In this course you will learn the skills to take part in a debate or discussion and present and extend seminars with facts, opinions, ideas and summaries. For the listening aspect, you will be able to listen to extended lectures, understand the difference between fact and opinion and take accurate notes. You will be able to read a variety of texts to obtain information, understand ideas and theories and write researched essays.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Preparation course

This course prepares students for the IELTS exam. This exam is used for similar purposes to the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination. There are two modules, general and academic. Students must have an academic IELTS result between 6.0 or 7.0 for university entry depending on the course they want to study. Students planning to enter TAFE, business or any other colleges or who are seeking residency in Australia need between 5.0 and 6.0 in the general IELTS module. High school students need 5.5 in the general module for most schools. The exam has four parts: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Cambridge preparation – First Certificate in English (FCE)

FCE is an intermediate level exam course. It is divided into writing, reading, grammar, listening and speaking sections. It is an ideal course for those who wish to study abroad or work in fields such as business or tourism which require highly developed language skills. The course will greatly increase knowledge of vocabulary and grammar structures as well as a students ability to produce routine letters, and to deal with telephone enquiries and face-to-face communication with speakers of English in all environments.

Test of English for International Communication course

The TOEIC course is an English language proficiency test. Students learn the skills they need for both general and business purposes.
